Dior Homme
Or: Orris and carrot and other roots
I have to admit before I get into this review.... I am in love with orris root scents in (almost) all variations. It is like an addiction. You put Irisone, Irones and alike in a mix and you have me on the hook. Nevertheless: There are some that are unlike others.
DIOR HOMME fulfills my orris root wishes and was something like a 5 second buy. Spritz, sniff, buy and yes: I never worried about my decision later. I was asked lately about orris root and where you find it and where not. It was a discussion from perfume lover to perfume lover and we came to a conclusion. Yes, when it smells a bit like carrot (carrot seed) then chances are good orris root is in it.
As general rule of thumb: The better a perfume is constructed, the more difficult it will be to find out what is in it.
This is true for DIOR HOMME, too. Designed by Olivier Polge, and on the market since about 5 years, it is an orris root lover's dream come true, with violet flower's irisone metallic shimmer, a slightly rotten orris root that is so delicately balancing the thin line between sour earth and silver light, and all wrapped up in a nice earthy, woody basket with lots of powder and some ambergris and a hint of what you find in higher doses in Cuir de Beluga.
I personally find it a masterpiece because it filled a gap in my head, an image of orris root that I have in my heart and nose. It manages to bring out the brillance of orris root and yet points to where it comes from: Fresh, humid earth and warm, rotten leaves.
